Package design for this set of Steelbook Blu-Rays for HBO’s Game of Thrones, Seasons 1-6. Working with the Emmy Award winning team at Elastic, the idea was to use the incredibly-detailed models from the show’s iconic main titles and present them in a way you could hold in your hand. After rendering out 6 different locations in angles never seen before, I used them to create the designs that would be printed onto the metal cases.

Additionally, each season would come with a 3D “sigil” magnet of a house associated with that location, which I designed and the immensely-talented sculptors at Sideshow Collectibles made real. Each sigil magnet fit in a precise embossed spot atop the case design, which, if you know anything about discrepancies in measurements between print and plastic molding, was no easy feat.

Then, each case and magnet combo had to fit inside a custom clear plastic slip cover for shipment and sale. Just imagine the headache endured in matching metal printing, metal embossing, plastic molding, plastic printing, DVD disc printing, and sticker printing (all of which have their own set of bleeds, material shrink, etc.). And then multiply that across 6 seasons.

My favorite detail that I’m proud to say was solely my doing is the design on the spine of each case. The show’s main titles feature what they call “the Astrolabe,” a glowing sun surrounded by spinning rings that floats above the location models. My idea was to add a slice of the Astrolabe on each season’s spine, and then collectors who chose to pick up the whole series and display the cases beside one another would be able to form the full picture.
