The Titles of David Fincher (Blank Check Version): A Case Study
An examination of the main title sequences of the films of director David Fincher, by way of the podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David.
For those unfamiliar, it's "a podcast on filmographies, directors who have had massive success early on in their career, and who have been giving a 'blank check' to pursue any crazy passion project they want. Sometimes those checks clear, and sometimes they bounce, baby."
As they are currently reaching the tail end of their current miniseries on director David Fincher (nicknamed "The Curious Pod of Benjamin Buttcast") I thought it'd be fitting to honor not only their podcast but also of one of my favorite directors of all time by modifying/recreating shots from some of the greatest main title sequences of all time. After all, when it comes to modern film titles, nobody does it like Fincher and crew.
The only time I've gotten to be involved with a Fincher project directly I was just starting as an animator, working at Elastic. They were doing post for the first season of House of Cards, and I got to set type for the main title sequence.
In many ways this project was a fun return to that headspace; I got to study the titles meticulously and be precise with my own additions. I've heard plenty of tales about how exacting Fincher's expectations are, and I tried to bring that same level of perfectionism to my work.
